Microsoft Vista and Memory usage

chasgiv3's Avatar
Ok I've noticed that when I switch from my game over to another application like IE to do some surfing in between games that my Hard drive tends to get hit a good bit. So I do some testing and find out that I'm running out of memory and I'm paging to the hard disk.

So I figure no problem how much memory should I get? I mean I don't want to get too much since Vista 32 bit had memory limititations on what it can address. So I do some research and read up on it in various white papers from Microsoft. So here's what I found. Please read it and tell me if I'm smoking dope here.

32 bit Vista itself with good settings can address up to 3GB of memory. However the way Vista works with graphics cards is to allocate whatever memory is in the graphics card (in my case 768) to it's own memory on the motherboard. Meaning that the larger the memory space on the GPU the larger amount required by Vista to address it. So I use about 512MB for my OS (Vista) and 768MB for the OS to address the GPU.

What does this all mean? It means if you run Vista you need MORE memory!!!!

So if I run 2-8800 GTX in SLI mode that means that Vista allocates 1536 MB of memory to that right off the bat. So 1.5GB. 32 bit Vista can address 3GB for the Operating System and applications. So if I want to go full boat I need 4.5GB of memory. So....I already have 2GB that means I need to add 2.5GB's of memory to my rig. So I could go with just another 1GBx2 and be caught just slightly under full boat by .5GB or I can go 2GBx2 and have 6GB's of memory. Plus what happens if I decide to go 64bit Vista? Then it can actually address the extra memory.

Welp...go big or go home....6GB here I come.

Ok ordered 4GB of the top of the line Patriot memory. That'll put me at 6GB. Cost me $104.00 after rebate. $20.00 rebate. Free shipping.

That Patriot memory shows OCing like a mutha.....however if I leave my older OCZ memory in there I'll have to keep the speeds down.

If you're running 64bit vista then yes. My understanding is that having 4GB free for 64 bit is the way to go. So if you're using 2GB for video ram allocation then you'd need at least 6GB. According to tests done by Tom's Hardware the sweet spot for Vista 64 bit is 8GB as long as your motherboard support memory re-mapping. I'm going 64 bit Vista when my 2nd GPU arrives.

The Patriot viper memory I bought can be overclocked to 1200. My OCZ memory pulls errors above 800. My understanding from looking at the results on gaming is that there gains are minimal on FPS.
